The British Empire could be pretty arbitrary when it came to assigning badges to its colonies. Uganda got a crane on its flag thanks to a bird-loving Governor, and Nigeria got its six-pointed star off of some random jug. Frederick Lugard, the colony’s first Governor-General, recounted the story in a 1940 letter.

The root of the problem dates back a few years in 1906 when the Colony of Lagos was Amalgamated with Protectorate of Southern Nigeria (Biafra), by Sir Walter Egerton to form the infamous Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria.

Before this infamous Amalgamation in 1906, the present SE and SS (including Edo) had nothing to do with the SW. It was Sir Walter Egerton that started using the resources of the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria to develop Yoruba land after he moved the capital from Calabar to Lagos in the same year. The once booming Southern Nigeria or (Niger Coast Protectorate) started losing its steam before the 1914 Amalgamation.

House where Frederick Lugard Signed the Amalgamation of Northern & Southern Nigeria, now in Ruins with Overgown Weeds, at Zungeru, in Northern Nigeria.

The town, Zungeru holds a great deal of significance to the Nigerian state, as it was the birthplace of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first Nigerian Senate President and later President of the Country; the former Senate President, David Mark; and Biafran former Leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. It equally has the reputation of being the burial place of the founder of Nigerian Scout Movement, Australia-born Henry James Speed.

This place is a one-storey cottage where Frederick Lugard lived during the amalgamation period, and it is located opposite the Amalgamation House. This was claimed to be the first administrative headquarters of the region before it was taken to Calabar.

There was a visitor’s centre planned at the site of Zik’s birthplace, at Zungeru, (You are looking at it), but the project was abandoned over a decade ago. What is left is a modern ruin. Zik’s grave in Onitsha has suffered the same fate – an abandoned white elephant project and another modern ruin. Is this how we should remember past heroes?

In 1905 Flora Shaw published A Tropical Dependency, her most extensive work. Although expressing views which assume European superiority, she stressed the fact that the vast majority of the British Empire was not white, and the book is valuable for its information on pre-colonial northern Africa
